We sanded it down to the bare wood, dyed it Golden oak, and polyurethane coated it with a commercial water-based polyurethane.

Joe got right to work, sanding the entire surface to a raw state that would be easy to work with. We then stained it with Golden Oak stain and protected it with a polyurethane coat. We used a commercial water-based polyurethane to prevent too many fumes.
